WANGANUI CUP

TropHy For Meeting At Awapuni MANAWATU’S GENEROUS GESTURE NOTES AND COMMENTS The trophy for the Wanganui Cup, to be run at Awapuni on Thursday, April 3, will be valued at £5O, and will be either a silver tea service or canteen of cutlery. It is being donated by the stewards of the Wanganui Jockey Club. This will be the first occasion on which the Wanganui Cup, first decided in 1873, has been set down for any other venue than the Wanganui Racecourse, but from 1931 to 1934 (inclusive? the event was suspended because of the depression. A generous gesture on the part of the Manawatu Racing Club Committee will enable the Wanganui Jockey Ciub to stage its winter meeting at Awapuni. Thus the three Wanganui meetings during the current season will have been held on the Manawatu Club’s course. The committee of the latter club showed a splendid spirit of co-operation, especially as the Wanganui meeting, on May 31 and June 2, will be held only three weeks before the Manawatu winter meeting, on June 19 and 21. Sir Beau has made a fine recovery from the lameness shown after a recent gallop_ and his display on the tracks yesterday morning, when he ' finished without effort in front of: Eurotas at the end of three furlongs > in 39sec., suggests that he will be ini excellent order for the Taranaki Stakes on Saturday of next week. , # * # ♦ I Belle Cane claims engagements in the Taranaki Cup and Flying Handicap at New Plymouth next week. She had not done any fast work since the Trentham January meeting, when she stepped out to run three furlongs yesterday morning on number one tratk. The Beau Pere filly showed that she has retained her form, for she registered 38 4-ssec. It will be interesting to note whether she takes on the sprint or the Centennial Cup next week. The Leighon filly Uvedale is to re-| sume at Bulls on' Saturday, at the ■ Rangitikei Racing Club's autumn i meeting. She ran the last half of five! furlongs yesterday in 52sec., taking! 64sec. for the full distance. Dynasty beat all but Classform in j the Rangitikei Cup twelve months; ago, and he will have another tilt at, the trophy event at Bulls on Satur- • day. His consistent form, however.' has resulted in his being allotted 8.8; by the handicapper, but he shaped ■ well yesterday morning in running six I furlongs in Imin. 17sec. * * * * A cable message from Melbourne states that Beaulivre is causing anxiety, and he may not race again at the Melbourne autumn meetings. | It is hoped that this brilliant son of Beau Pere can be produced for the A.J.C. Autumn meeting at Randwick as he would add to the Easter attractions. • * * • The success of Doira in the Hazlett Gold Cup was one of the most popular features of the Dunedin meeting, and her breeder and owner, Mr. E. Hay, who was present to receive the handsome gold cup attached to the stake, was widely congratulated on the attractive performance of his consistent filly. With Palfrey winning the Champagne Stakes on the first day Mr. Hay collected 1575 in stakes at the meeting in addition to the gold cup valued at £lOO. M. Kirwan, rider of Te Maare in the Novice Stakes at the Westland meeting on Saturday, was cautioned for an error of judgment in causing interference to the winner, Master Flash, along the back stretch. A. Stokes, the rider of Aggravate, in the Williams Memorial Handicap was severely reprimanded for tareless riding in that he ceased riding the horse nearing the post, and failed to get him going again in time to ward off Entail's late challenge. Royal Chief once more indicated in the Hazlett Gold Cup that he has lost much of his former finishing billiance. He was not as far back as usual when the business stages were reached, but had to be hard ridden for most of the journey to be kept theer. He certainly made one of his fast forward moves in the straight, but his wellknown final effective spurt was again missing. Trench Fight gave an attractive performance in winning the principal event at Wingatui on Saturday, but unfortunately he was very lame afterwards, and a serious view of his trouble was taken by his trainer, C. McCarthy. The big horse has previously displayed soreness after his races, but his condition on Saturday when leaving the birdcage seemed more deoprooted than formerly. A few strides from the post, Knight Commander bored in under the whip, and getting on to the heels of Trench Fight, narrowly missed dislodging hi.; rider. It was thought when Trench Fight returned that he was suffering from the effects of this incident, but; this was not the case. Ke has won j lour good races v.'trin £1285 for his present owner, so that he has proved to be be a good proposition since being purchased out of the Chokebore stable. * * ♦ ♦ Messrs. D. J. Malone and R. F. Tlley, of the Stratford Racing Club, attended a recent meeting of the Taranaki Hunt Club Committee. The programme of the proposed patriotic meeting to be hold at. Stratford oa March 22 was fully discussed. Provided a permit is granted for the holding of the meeting it should considerably augment Taranaki pal riot dfunds.
