Mr. R. J. O’Dea Hawera, is visit ing Wanganui.

Mr. R. W. Turner has been appoint, ed officer commanding the Marton Company of the Home Guard,

Mr. J. J. Lissette has been appointed Home Guard company organiser for Parikino and river districts.

Captain A. Copeland, master of the coastal motor-ship Holmdale, who was ashore for two months on sick leave, has resumed his command. The Holmdale was at Wanganui recently.

Sergeant-Pilot Alan Dale, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, who has recently undergone training at Ohakea Air Force Station, has been visiting Fordell where he lived for a number of years. He is a son of Mr. D. S. Dale, Kakahi, formerly of Fordell.

Colonel J. H. Whyte, who has represented the Wanganui Education Board on the Palmerston North High School’s Board, has resigned. He was given a vote of thanks at yesterday’s meeting of the board for his services over a long period. Mr. W. G. Biack,’ a member of the Wanganui Education Board, has replaced hirfi.

Mr. J. L. Sullivan, the Taranaki and New Zealand Rugby representative, was among the draft of 37 Taranaki volunteers for the Fifth Reinforcements of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force who entered camp on Tuesday. The men travelled on the New Plymouth-Wanganui-Wellington express.

Miss G. E. Ross, head teacher at the Keith Street Infants’ School, Wanganui, has retired from the teaching profession after 37 years’ service. It was decided, at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday, to forward her a letter of appreciation of her long and faithful service.

Pilot-Officer Basil Ivan Clausen, who was previously reported missing, but whose death as the result of an aircraft accident, has now been announced, was 24 years of age and was the son of Mrs. Clausen and the late Mr. A. E. Clausen, of Palmerston North. He was educated at the Central School, Palmerston North, the Auckland Grammar School, and the Otorohanga District High School. He received preliminary air training at Levin, New Plymouth and Blenheim, and left of England last September. Pilot-Officer Clausen represented the Otorohanga High School at Rugby and cricket. He was also a keen cyclist, swimmer, golfer and tennis player. Two of his brothers saw service in the last war and a younger brother is- at present training on H.M.S. Philomel as a wireless operator.
