WANGANUI BOWLING SINGLES

TITLE WON BY GLOVER HERD BEATEN IN THE FINAL WINNER’S HARD GAME WITH HAYWARD IN SEMI-FINAL The post-section and linal games in the Wanganui Bowling Centre's annual open singles tournament were played yesterday on St. John's green. Glover (St. John’s) had an easy win in the final against Herd (St. John’s). A tricky wind gave trouble at times. From tlie previous day’s play six play-1 ers qualified. In the first round Herd (St. John’s) defeated Boyd (Wanganui) and Thomas (Ohakune) won from Brown (St. oJhn's). Glover (St. John’s) and Hayward (Wanganui) had byes. In the second round Herd beat Thomas and Glover won from Hayward. This left Herd and Glover to play the final. Boyd v. Herd. In this game Boyd opened by scoring on the first two ends with four points. When the 9th was reached the score stood 7 all. From then on Herd got in front, where he remained to the finish. Brown v. Thomas. Thomas, a young player from Onakune, did remarkably well in this game. On the 11th eld, when Brown secured two, the score stood 10 —9 to Thomas, while a four to him on the 14th made the boaid read 17 —9 m his favour. In the remainder of the game Brown secured three single; to a brace and a single to Thomas, who won by five points. Hayward v. Glover. This was a most interesting game all through. The two players were only separated by two or three points it any time. On the 14th the score was 9 all. On the 19th the board read 13 to 10 to Glover. On the 20th Hayward secured three, bringing the score to 13 all, and there was then one end to play. The last end built up in favour of Hayward. When Glover Kad his last bowl to play Hayward was laying two. Glover put in a firm one, slightly shifting the scorers and kitty, which resulted in two points going to him and giving him victory. Herd v. Thomas. For a young player who comes from Ohakune, Thomas put up a remarkable defence against such a wellseasoned player as Herd. The 10th end saw the score at 8 to 7 in favour of Herd. Two to Thomas on the 19th made the score 16 to 14 to Herd. A brace to Herd on the 20th made it 18—14 to Herd. With one end still to play, Thomas required all his four bowls to be in the count to make a tie. In his endeavour to bring this about he burnt two ends. In the third replay ne was only able to secure a single. With more experience al tournament play Tlfomas should eventually become a formidable opponent. The Final. As Herd was the winner of the open singles last year it was fully expected that the linal with Glover would be of an interesting character. No doubt the strain of the previous day somewhat effected Herd. Glover scored on the first five ends with eight points. Herd secured a brace on the 6th. Singles to him on the 9th and 11th made the score 13 to .4 against him. Three on the 13in, a single on the 14th, to Herd made the score 14 to 8 in favour of Glover, This finished the scoring as far as Herd was concerned. In the last four ends played Glover secured seven points. The last three ends were not played. Results at a glance:— Ist Round. • R. Boyd 13 v. G. Herd 19. Brown 13 v. C. Thomas 20.
