POLICE FUNERAL

CONSTABLE N. BERNTSEN SERVICE IN DANNEVIRKE Many of his former colleagues in the Police Force at Wanganui attended the funeral in Dannevirke on Tuesday afternoon of Constable N. G. F. Berntsen, w'ho lost his life by drowning while on duty at the Port Bowen wreck during the week-end. The police party, including constables from Palmerston North and stations in the Dannevirke district, paraded in the tow'n and at the cemetery, where they saluted the grave after the burial service.

The Police Force in Wanganui was represented by Senior-Sergeant F. Culloty, Detective J. Murray, Detective H. A. Hay, Constables G. A. How’es, R. D. Gardner, E. J. Barry, R. C. Voullaire, A. C. Shilton, W. E. Auld, C. S. Rouxel, and J. B. Wakelin. Mr. W. F. Johnston, of the Department of Industries and Commerce, who is in charge of the Port Bowen operations, also attended. The police representatives, besides the Wanganui men, included S. Saunders and Constables J. Colboume, G. H. Thomassen, R. R. Forsythe and J. S. Howell, Dannevirke; Constable J. Ryan, Ormondville; and four constables from Palmerston North and three others from stations in the Dannevirke district.

Constables Howes, Gardner, Barry. Wakelin, Voullaire and Auld were pall-bearers.

The party left the Dannevirke .Police Station at 2.15 p.m. and marched to the Presbyterian Church, and, following a service, headed the long funeral cortage as far as the recreation grounds, where they joined cars to the cemetery. At the cemetery gate the police again paraded and marched to the graveside.
