WANGANUI PLUNKET SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEEIING HELD

At the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society held on Tuesday last the president, Mrs. T. Hine, presided over the following members; Mesdames Adams, Cole, Currie, Deacon, Jenkins, Keesing, McGregor, McPhail, Mac Lean, Nelson, Nixon, G. H, Robertson, RosS, Ryan, Wickham and Wilberfoss. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Burr, Davies, Graham, Millward, Taiboys and Mr. W. Searle. The Plunket nurses reported that during the month there were 839 old cases on the books and 122 new cases. Visitors to the offices totalled 1759, which included 841 adults, 826 babies, 70 children and 22 others. Visits paid to homes numbered 217. In the prenatal section there were 11 new cases and 22 return visits. During the month Dr. Cook and Dr. Body met at the Plunket rooms to arrange details in connection with the medical examination of pre-school children. Dr. Body held the first examination on February 7. The pre-school section is a very important branch ol the society’s work and in future will be directly under medical supervision. The nurses would be grateful for any wooden toys and also a large wooden toy box for the room used by the pre-school schildren. The matron of Stewart Karitane Hospital reported that 22 babies and nine mothers had been admitted and 22 babies and 12 mothers’ discharged. Cases had been received from Wanganui, Wairoa, Hawera, Kaponga, Waipukurau, Stratford, Inglewood, Feilding; Waitotara, Ratana, Palmerston North and Foxton. Donations were received from the following, to whom the society extend appreciation and thanks: Estate A. Manguson, deceased, £l5l 15s lOd for Plunket funds, Gonville Sewing Circle £2 for Plunket funds, Woodville Plunket Society £3 3s and Patea Plunket Society £5 for Stewart Karitane Hospital funds. The president referred to the recent retirement of Nurse Adams, who had been on the staff since 1929. Prior to her departure for Auckland, farewell parties were given by the president and committee and by Plunket mothers, at which Nurse Adams was the recipient of several handsome gifts as tokens of affection and appreciation of her loyal and efficient services. Nurse Ogden, who is taking Nurse Adams’ place, was invited to meet the committee and was warmly welcomed. Permission was given to the Home of Compassion and S.P.C.A. to use the society’s collection tins on their forthcoming street appeals. i The president spoke of the work of I the Stewart Karitane House Commit- ! tee and the need of replenishing linen and blankets. Authority was given to make the necessary purchases. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. McGregor for her gift of a picture for the mothers’ sitting room in the mothercraft building. The following ladies were appointed to serve on the House Committee for th< next six months: Mesdames. Keesing, McGregor, Nixon, Ryan and Wilberfoss.

Mrs. McGregor’s offer to make and sell sweets on one day a week, as the Plunket Society’s effort for patriotic funds, was accepted. The members of the committee expressed their willingness to co-operate.
