NAVY LEAGUE
WOMEN’S AUXILIARY IN WANGANUI
The monthly meetings of the Wanganui Women’s Auxiliary of the Navy League were resumed on Friday, February 7. The resignations of Mrs. Tovell Soundy as secretary and of Mrs. Fantham as treasurer were accepted with regret. Correspondence included copies forwarded from Wellington of letters from London headquarters. One gave information as to the arrival of comforts in England and stated the urgent and increasing need for pullovers, seaboot stockings and socks, while mittens are definitely not required. Another addressed, to Lord Galway personally puts clearly the case against the adoption of individual ships, which has been found unsatisfactory owing to loss of vessels, changes in ownership, unequal distribution of comforts and, in some cases, the sudden cessation, without warning, of supplies. This matter was discussed and it was decided to abide bv the decision of the Admiralty, at the same time keeping in touch with the Prestdft North End. During January three cases were dispatched through the Navy League War Council and have been forwarded to London unopened. The case for the trawler contained 27 individual parcels of scarves, etc., of regulation pattern, handkerchief, book or pack of cards, two small tins of sweets and biscuits, also 10 rugs, completing the 27 for the ship’s company, two large and four small tins of pie fruit, three tins dried milk and a biscuit tin of sugar. The second, addressed to II M.S Acacia (Lt. A. G. Newell), a New Zealand-manned vessel, contained 16 pullovers, 19 pairs seaboot stockings, 12 pairs socks, nine pairs steering gloves, seven scarves, etc., four pairs underpants and nine rugs. Tiie third, for a merchant ship, contained 16 pullovers, 20 pairs seaboot stockings, 11 pairs socks, nine pairs steering gloves, seven scarves, etc., three pairs underpants, nine rugs. Articles knitted of light or mixed wools were dyed by Mr. Garney Spooner, free of cost. Much-appreciated letters were received from Lt. Larsen, who has given such willing and efficient help in the reception of our gifts and from members of the ship’s company. Since the last meeting eight names have been added to the list of Wanganui lads in the naval forces. Two of these have left to join the Fleet Air Arm. one has gone to join the Royal Navy, three are in the New Zealand Division of the Navy and two ate at the new training station at Moutihi.
