DROWNED IN SURF

DEATH OF CONSTABLE N. G. BERNTSEN ON DUTY ON PORT BOWEN The body of Constable N. G. Berntsen, who was stationed °n the wreck of the liner Port Bowen, was found on the Castlecliff Beach at 7.45 yesterday morning. He had been fishing on Saturday night off the freighter, at high tide, when his line became fouled. He waited for low tide, which was about 2 o’clock yesterday morning. and swam out to try and free the line, and apparently got into difficul ties. Constable Berntsen was aged 25 years and leaves a widow and two children. He had been in the police force three years and was transferred to Wanganui from Wellington about six months ago. An inquest, for identification purposes, was opened yesterday before Mr. S. M. Dixon, coroner. The funeral will take place at Dannevirke to-morrow.
