TRANSFER TO NAVY
CONFIRMATION OF ACTION AUCKLAND. Feb. 1. “I am sure the city welcomes the opportunity to assist in the promotion of the naval establishment at Motuihi.” said the Mayor. Sir Ernest Davis, at a meeting of the Auckland Cty Council, when appreciative letters were received from the naval authorities in connection with the prompt action of the council in meeting the wishes of the Naval Department in closing the island to the public as a result of the decision to use the island for departmental requirements. Sir Ernest added that the criticism of the use of the island for naval training purposes did not call for serious comment, because it was obvious that the exigiencies of the war had an immeasurably superior claim to civil amenities. He also explained that Motuihi belonged to the Government, and the council had only been given temporary title to it for recreation purposes. Since January, 1928, to December 31 last the excess of expenditure over receipts on the island had been £6477, the principal items of expenditure having been £4511 on repairs to the wharf, breastw-ork and landing slip, and £3325 on expenditure on the marine park and salaries. Act on taken in connection with the island was confirmed, and the town clerk. Mr. J. Melling, was instructed to negotiate with the Government regarding the payment of an ed amount to cover interest and sinking fund.
