THE HOME GUARD. On Monday last the Town Hall ' proved too small for the number of ! members of the Home Guard, so the I parade will be held in Classes 1 and , 2 on the Recreation Grounds this evening, the men falling in at 7.30 p.m. Guardsmen are reminded to bring along all .303 rifles which are not in good shooting order, for drill purposes. Class 3 will attend at the i Town Hall at 7.30 p.m. GENERAL NEWS. Great sympathy is felt for Mr. and I Mrs. J. Wightman, junr., whose little daughter died on Friday as the result of an accident at Foxton Beach. Constable T. Donovan resumed duty at Bulls this week, and Constable Bowley, who wes relieving, returned to Marton. Mr. J. E. Walker, chairman of the Town Board, presided over a largely attended meeting of town and country people on Friday evening, when it was reported that splendid support was forthcoming for the proposed gala day, to be held on the Domain next month, the proceeds being in aid of the Soldiers’ 'Club, which is to be completed and furnished. Business and other people have promised some 20 trophies for an art union, and support is promised by members of the R.N.Z. Air Force. Mr. W. A. Sutherland is in charge of the Highland events, and donations have been received to defray expenses in connection with the dancing and piping. The Rangitikei Racing Club’s autumn meeting is now less than three weeks off, and steady progress is being made with various improvements, including additional seating accommodation, bar extension, etc. The course and enclosures are in fine order after the recent rain, and patrons will find everything to their liking at this popular race meeting on March 1. Private Fred Howard is on leave from Ngaruawahia military camp, and was married on Saturday afternoon.
