RANGITIKEI CRICKET

leading team beaten by POREWA MARTON AND OLD BOYS’ EXCITING FINISH (Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Feb. 8. The defeat of the leading team, Air Force, by Porewa, and the exciting finish to the Old BoysMarton encounter were the features of to-day’s cricket played in Marton. Porewa won by the handsome margin of 64 runs, While Old Boys just shaded Marton to win by 16 runs.

The competition is now very even. Air Force still retain the lead by the narrow margin of one point, with Porewa and Old Boys lying close, one point behind. This was Air Force's first loss since December 7, when Marton beat them by one run. The day was ideal for cricket, the wickets and outfield being good and the temperature mild. HONOURS BOARD Batting M. Marshall (Porewa) 71 E. C. Calcinai (Air Force) 50 D. A. Cameron (Porewa) 43 P. J. Corballis (Marton) 33 | C. A. Tidy (Marton) 31 Bowling L. Smith (Marton), six for 46. D. Comrie (Old Boys), five for 36. D. A. Cameron (Porewa), three for nine. H. F. Low (Old Boys), three for 35. F. Angus (Air Force), three for 70. FIRST LOSS SUFFERED BY AIR FORCE Air Force won the toss and elected to field. Parkinson and Cameron gave Porewa a good start, sending the score to 63 before the latter was caught In the outfield by Shield (substitute) for 43. Parkinson returned to the pavilion at 80. A fourth wicket stand between Fullerton-Smith and M. Marshall took the score frt>m 81 to 162, before the former was bowled. Marshall continued to bat brightly, hitting hard anything short, and when he was unfortunately run out after collecting 71, including eight boundary shots, the innings was declared closed with 188 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets. Angus returned the best figures. Air Force were weakened by the absence of Philps, Brooks and Younghusband and the only batsman who presented any difficulty to the Porewa bowlers was E. Calcinai, who batted almost throughout the innings for a well-earned and carefully-compiled 50, which included eight fours. He was given out leg before. D. Cameron polished off the tail-ends and finished with three for nine, including the valuable Calcinai wicket. Air Force played one man short. Details: — Porewa R. Towers, W. Hayward and R. Baker, they had a fairly good team, which included their former captain, L. Smith, who has been discharged from the Army. I. Jolly, who is on annual leave, was absent from the Old Boys side. Old Boys made the moderate total of 116 after six wickets had fallen for 76. The tail-enders contributed to what proved to be a valuable forty odd runs. Marton’s chances of scoring a victory were dashed when the side lost the first four wickets for 10. However, Corballis (33) and Tidy (31) nearly turned defeat into victory with a valuable eighth wicket partnership which produced 41 runs. Nine wickets were down for 100 and 17 runs were wanted to win with Tidy still batting well, but a ball from Comrie uprooted Tidy's stumps without an addition to the score and the game ended in an Old Boys victory. The match was notable for the success of the two Marton veterans, L. Smith, who captured six wickets for 47, and the patient innings by C. A. Tidy for 31. An incident in the Marton innings was to find two batsmen, Corballis and Sladden, both running for the same end. This misunderstanding cost Marton a valuable wicket as SiaCden was just getting set. Had he not been run out the result of the gaire could easily 'Save been different. Details:— Old Boys M. Wysocki, lbw, b Broad . 4 J. Duncan, c Smith, b Broad 7 C. S. Beechey, lbw, b Bailey 26 H. F.
