WANGANUI AIRMAN INJURED

TWO PLANES COLLIDE ONE MAN KILLED, TWO OTHERS HURT [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. An ail-man-pilot under training was killed and two others, one of them from Wanganui, were injured when two trainer aircraft collided in a landing approach at the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Taieri at 7.30 to-day. The Wanganui man hurt was Leading Aircraftman Philip Walter Darcy Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Stewart, Moana Flats, Wanganui. He was slightly injured and suffered bruises and shock, being taken to the Taieri Air Station Hospital. The other victims were:--Leading Aircraftman Desmond Thomas Francis Hanrahan, killed. His mother is Mrs. H. Hanrahan, ast Street, Ashburton. Flying-Officer Leonard FrederickPoore, broken left arm, bruises, and shock, admitted to Dunedin Public Hospital. His wife is Mrs. E. M. Poore, Green Street, Mosgiel. The plane of which Leading Aircraftman Hanrahan was sole occupant had been engaged in flying exercises and was coming in to land when it collided at about 100 feet with the other plane, piloted by Flying-Officer Poore. The latter had been giving flying instruction to Leading Aircraftman Stewart. Leading Aircraftman Stewart, before joining the R.N.Z.A.F. in November. was farming in Canterbury. He trained at Weraroa and went to Tairri for further instruction. He is aged 22 years.
