PETROL RATIONS
FURTHER CUT OPPOSED SOUTH TARANAKI VIEWS. HAWERA, Feb. 4. The statement of the Minister of Supply at the recent conference of the Master Grocers' Association regarding petrol rationing was dis- , ] cussed at a general meeting of the I Automobile Association (South TaraI naki) at Hawera last night. Members i pointed out that if the position reI garding the supply of petrol was dif- ; ferent from that of 12 months ago, | motorists were entitled to a clear i statement of the respects in which it i differed. I As far as was known New Zealand I consumers of petrol suffered more inconvenience than those anywhere else in the Empire, it was stated. The Australian ration was more liberal than New Zealand’s and it had been pointed out to the Government that the present restrictions allowed motorists to gai petrol in only a hand-to-mouth fashion, and the demand made on motor transport in the event of emergency would through the shortage cause nothing but confusion. No satisfactory reply was fortcom- : ing to the request that motorists should be allowed 16, 12 and eight galf lons per month respectively for private cars. A resolution was passed to impress on motor unions the importance not only of opposing further petrol restrictions but also of urging the granting of the additional quantities.
