PATEA HARBOUR BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Harbour Board was held on Tuesday, Mr. F. Parsons presiding. Messrs. Clapham, Meuli, Watkins and Ramsbottom were also present. The Shipwreck Relief Fund wrote asking for a donation. The society stated that recently £1405 had been spent on passengers and crew of the R.M.S. Niagara and £6250 had been donated to the shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners’ Fund, for the relief of those suffering from shipping disasters in British waters. £l4O had also been given to the British Sailors' Society. It was decided to donate £5 5s to the society. Mr. F. Lund waited on the board with reference to the repairs to a house leased to him by the board. He asked that he be allowed to use the house, as long as it will last, as it is really beyond repair. It was decided that the request be granted. The chairman said he had inspected the repairs carried out on the east wall and found them to be quite effective. Repairs on the western wall would be shortly carried out. The harbourmaster, Captain. Barnes, reported that the weather in general during December was good, and ships moved freely in and out. The dredge operated until December 20 and removed a lot of soil from the berths. Conditions in the north-east wall remained satisfactory. The west wall had not caused any trouble during the month, owing to steepness of the beach. Progress on the west wall had been slow owing to the lack of labour. For the month of January there were 24 arrivals, and 21 departures. The dredge “Wallace” 'resumed work on the 13th, and continued dredging through the spring tides. The yard and gear had been overhauled.
