MAY HAVE BEEN ON MISSING RAFT
LIGHT SEEN AT SEA STATEMENT TO PATEA HARBOUR BOARD. PATEA, Feb. 5. Fishermen in Patea saw a light bobbing about at sea and travelling south at about 9 p.m. on January 27, when a raft carrying Mr. and Mrs. C. Oakes, Hawera, were blown to sea from Ohawe Beach, stated Mr. F. Ramsbottom at a meeting of the Patea Harbour Board. It was a great pity the steamer Hawera when it went in search of the raft did not travel south instead of north, he said. Mr. F. Parsons said that when they were notified that the raft had been washed out to sea if was about 8.15. The harbourmaster had offered to get a crew and take the harbour board launch out in search of the raft, but as the seas were becoming rough and lhe Hawera was going out within an hour, it was decided to divert the ship. If the Hawera had not been available the launch would have gone out. The seas were very rough and the Hawera, which was loaded with cheese, was standing on her head all night, added Mr. Parsons. Mr. G. H. Meuli was of the opinion that the man and woman on the raft would perish from exposure.
