SWIMMING BATHS THRONGED

Wanganui sweltered in the hottest day of the summer yesterday, when S2 degrees were registered. The sky clouded over shortly after 2 o'clock, and it looked as if the long drought was at an end, but later dark clouds gave way to a blue sky and the sun beat down as pitiless as ever. Swimming baths, both at St. St. George’s Gale and at Gonville, were thronged with children early in the day and later with adults. Several still on holiday at the beach sought relief in the surf. Vendors of ice cream and soft drinks in the city and suburbs are recording the best trade for a long time. One of the busiest places in the camp on the racecourse was the canteen, which was besieged by the newlyarrived Territorials, who went into camp yesterday
