FINAL meeting for year

ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME

A festive air prevailed at the December meeting of the Fordell Women’s Institute, at which there was a large attendance of members and members’ children, who were welcomed by the president, Mrs. K. L. Bruce. An entertainment was given by the children, and bright touches were added to the scene by vases ol iceland poppies, cinerarias and antirrhinums.

The meeting opened with the singing of the “Ode to Friendhsip,” and Miss Barnes read the motto, “A laugh’s worth a hundred groans in any market.”

General business was dealt with, and members who wish to join the proposed dressmaking class, to be given by Miss Betty Dewe, were asked to hand in their names.

The Golden Thread, “Tales of New Zealand,” was continued by the Rev G. W. Hercus, who gave an interesting description of a trip down the West Coast, South Island. Mrs. Bruce expressed members’ appreciation to the speaker. The children presented an excellent programme, which was as follows: Recitation, Jocelyn Stewart; sacred song, Barry Stewart; vocal trio, Polly Anderson, Shirley Williams and Thelma Edwards; recitation, Doris Ross; vocal duets (Xmas hymns and carols), Violet Piercey and Petei Morgan; recitations, Mary Bousefield; song and chorus, V. Piercey (soloist), P. Anderson, T. Edwards aid S. Williams; recitation, B. Stewart. The pianoforte accompaniments were played by Miss J. Christie and the concert was arranged by Mrs. R. A. Edwards.

The juvenile guests were served with afternoon tea and soft drinks and greatly enjoyed their treat. The afternoon tea hostesses were the members of the committee.

There was a good number of entries in the r/onthly competitions, which resulted: Darning (done in hall), Mrs. R. Campbell 1, Mrs. Power 2, Mrs. Duncan 3. Fuchsia bloom. Mrs. Christie 1. Mrs. Howie 2, Mrs. Duncan 3. Mrs. Morgan judged the entries.

The presidenf thanked'the children for the excellent entertainment they had given and expressed Xmas greetings and happy wishes for the New Year to members and children. Mrs. Morgan, on behalf'of the children, expressed thanks for the enjoyable

Kench’s Pram House, 235 Avenue, who has a really unique collection of toys for the young folks — toys that will stand hard wear. Included in the collection of wooden toys are rocking horses from 10s, engines from 2s 9d to 13s 6d, wheelbarrows from 4s 6d to 12s 6d, lorries from 8s 3d to 19s 6d, and for the times—a horse and trolley at 3s 6d. There are dolls’ prams that would delight any girl. They are in various styles and priced from 6s 6d to 62s 6d. Toddlers’ chairs are from 255, and high chair for baby from 355, all painted in attractive colours. There are all kinds of shopping baskets, lined worked baskets (from 12s 6d) and trays. And, of course, a pram lor baby.
