The Rev. Father W. E. Ryan, Hamilton, has been appointed to take charge of the Catholic Institute at the Papakura military camp.

E. C. Penn, foreman of the Wanganui County Council, was given a motion of sympathy at the monthly meeting on Friday, his wife having died recently.

Mr. W. H. Roy, inspector of the Department_ of the Public Health, has been transferred to Christchurch, and Mr. W. S. Steele is returning to Wanganui from Trenthjm Camp.

Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, who was the guest of honour at the break-up ceremonies of St. George's anal the Wanganui Collegiate School, returned to Wellington on Saturday.

Mr. George Prince, 116 Campbell Street, Wanganui, celebrated his 88th birthday yesterday. Mr. Prince, who •was born in Somersetshire, England, has been in Wanganui district 60 years. He farmed for many years in the Westmere district, and was a successful grower of potatoes and wheat.

The death has occurred in Sydney of Mr. James Richard Adams Wilkes. Mr. Wilkes was born and educated in Napier and was employed on the office staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company for many years. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alice Edenboro (Sydney) and Mrs. Nellie Smith (Dunedin), and one brother, Mr. G. A. Wilkes (Hamilton).

The Rev. D. M. Hercus, who has been appointed chaplain to, and a member of the staff of Scots College, Wellington, is a son of the Rev. R. J. D. Hercus, of the Christchurch Boys' High School. He was ordained in 1931, and his first church was Brooklyn. He is at present in charge of a parish in Marlborough, is a member of the Board of Governors of Marlborough College, and Moderator of the Presbytery of Nelson-Marlborough.
