Canterbury Province. To-day is the anniversary of the founding of the Canterbury Province.

Bush Fatality. John David Jenkins, Invercargill, aged 36 years, was killed on Saturday, in National Park, when a limb of a tree fell on him.

Calls to Fires. Two calls to grass fires were received by the Wanganui Central Fire Brigade yesterday, one to Imlay and one to St. John’s Hill. No damage was done.

Woo] Appraisal. The second Wanganui wool appraisal of the season began yesterday. This time a total of 23,000 bales of wool is being dealt with, compared with 12,000 bales last month.

Rowing and Cricket. A tw'o-day cricket match between the first elevens of Christ's College, Christchurch, and Wanganui Collegiate School will b'gin on the college ground to-day. To-morrow the rowing races between the first and second fours of the two colleges will take placa on the Wanganui River.

Medical Supplies. The secretary of the Wanganui P.ed Cross Centre, Mr. R. L. Garden, lias received a copy of inventory of a further 41 cases of goods forwarded to the Director-General of Medical Services with the Third General Hospital from Red Cross headquarters. The consignment includes 10,579 articles and sundry packages of old linen. Crowds at Beach.

With fine weather prevailing there was a large attendance at Castlecliff beach yesterday and trams on that route recorded good business. During the afternoon the Queen Alexandra Band, under Mr. L. R. Spurdie, gave an enjoyable programme of music. There was a large attendance at Kai Iwi beach, and Virginia Lake also had its quota of visitors. Manawatu Bowlers* Visit. A party of Manawatu bowlers paid a visit to Wanganui on Saturday and played a friendly game against Wanganui Centre rinks. They were welcomed by Mr. W. Stone, president of the Wanganui Bowling Centre, and the thanks of the visitors were extended by Mr. J. Nash, president of the Manawatu Bowling Centre.

Road Improvements. It was reported at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui County Council that heavy rain last month caused slips on the Wangaehu Valley Road, but the majority of them have now been cleared. A small bridge near the 16-mile peg on the Mangamahu Road is to be replaced by a concrete culvert and filling early in the new year.

Sweet-eating Community. “New Zealanders are a great sweeteating community,” said a representative of a large confectionery manufacturing company in evidence before the Auckland Area Manpower Committee last week. Witness said that the demand continued throughout the year, although it fluctuated according to the weather. In hot weather the public preferred ice cream, but in cold they demanded sweets.

Battalion Magazine. Lieutenant P. Koorey, of the First Echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has forwarded a copy of the troop magazine of the First Battalion, Wellington Regiment. The magazine, which is typewritten, contains a comprehensive review of the sporting and social activities ol the officers and men of the regiment in Egypt. From all accounts the regiment’s representatives are well to the fore in both work and sport. Grocery Business. Maypole Stores, Ltd., is to take over the grocery business conducted for many years on St. John's Hill by Mr. F. Mackie from to-day. Mr. Mackie, following ill-health, is living temporarily in Wellington. Mr. Mackie some years ago was employed with the firm of Gibson and Patterson, Wanganui, and then worked in Wellington for about 15 years before returning to Wanganui. He is a member of the executive of the Wanganui Football Association. He is also a vice-presi-dent of the Wanganui Cricket Association.

Amusing Bowling "Stunt.” Prior to the commencement of' play in the Manawatu-Wanganui match on the Wanganui bowling green on Saturday afternoon a very amusing bowling stunt was staged. All bowlers placed themselves round the outside edges of the green, in the middle of which was placed a jack. At a given signal each played, his bowl toward the ja-.k, a smab. trophy going to the player whose bowl was closest to the kitty at the finish. It was an interesting innovation which was appreciated by visitors and Wanganui players alike.

Profit-sharing in Industry. A recommendation that profit-shar-ing in industry and commerce be investigated, and, if thought practicable, it be made a plank of the platform of the National Party, was unanimously approved at a meeting of the Greymouth branch of the National Party. It was decided that the recommendation be forwarded to the policy committee in Wellington. It was considered that, after firms had provided for a fair return on the capital invested, the remainder of the profits should be distributed among the »m--ployees. Military Activity. To take part in brigade manoeuvres in Palmerston North this week officers and men of both the First Battalion of Wellington West Coast Regiment and A Company (Wellington) New Zealand Scottish Regiment left Wanganui on Saturday. Some went by train and others by motor transport. The Taranaki Regiment, which has been in camp on the Waverley Racecoursed, passed through the city on Saturday morning. The Wellington West Coast Regiment will return to Wanganui a few days before the camp breaks up before Christmas. The Scottish Regiment will not return to Wanganui.
