RANGITIKEI A. AND P. ASSOCIATION MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE A meeting of the general committee of the Rangitikei A. and P. Association was held on Saturday afternoon when the president, Mr. N. Anderson, occupied the chair. Also present were Messrs. A. W. Bicknell, V. Nicholls, A. Thurston, W. R. Anderson, A. Addis, F. Cottrell, H. O’Callaghan, A. E. Samways, A. R. Fannin, J. Marshall, C. J. Fannin, L. O'Callaghan, C. W. Newport, J. Collier, M. Durrant, A. J. Mickleson, J. Revell, N. Vickers, C. B. Cottrell, F. Ferguson, Mrs. L. Strange (Raetihi) and the secretary (Cr. C. E. Darvill). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. A. O. P. Bailey, G. Brown, J. Quirk, E. Fannin, S. Steedman and C. C. Mickleson. The secretary reported that February 28th, 1941, had been confirmed as the date for the next show. Mr. Darvill announced that the auditor, Mr. A. M. Ryan, had donated his auditor’s fee to the association as a prize for the livestock section. The secretary also informed the meeting that the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club had agreed to hold a sports meeting on the night of the show, but it would have to be chiefly a young people's gathering. Mr. V. Nicholls reported that Boreham’s radio broadcasting service was available for show day on the same terms as last year. It was decided to engage the service. The president informed the meeting that he intended to give a trophy lor the member obtaining the most entries in the stock section (horses, sheep and cattle). On the motion of Mr. F. Cottrell the meeting accorded Mr. Norman Anderson a hearty vote of thanks. A recommendation from the schedule committee that the prize-money for the next show remain the same as last year, was adopted. Schedule for Show. The schedule for the forthcoming show was considered and certain alterations were made. It was decided to delete the dual jump from the horse section, and on the motion of Mrs. Strange, it was resolved to give a prize for the horse that has not won more than two first prizes at any A. and P. show at the time of competing. In the pony section it was decided that the age for all classes b? the age at the date of competition and not at the dat of entry. The age in Class 41 was reduced from 14 years and under, to under 14 years. The secretary reported that £lO had been donated by the Meat Board for the chiller cattle class and considerable discussion ensued regarding this class. Mr. W. R. Anderson said that it would be a pity to let old beasts compete against young cattle. The idea was to keep the beasts as young as possible. The chairman: It takes a lot of feeding to keep a 21-year-old chiller. It might be hard to get entries. Mr. N. Vickers moved that the age be altered Irom 21 to 31 years. He said that nothing older than 31 years was required. Mr. A. J. Mickleson seconded the motion. Mr. A. E. Samways: Why not have two classes—one for 21-year-olds and the other for 3L-year-olds? Mr Mickleson: We could not get enough entries. Mr. W. R. Anderson moved an amendment that weight and not age be the determining factor in the chiller beef class. The amendment was carried. It was further resolved that the weight be not more than 7301b5. Mr. V. Nicholls moved that the association buy a trophy with the £lO donated by the Meat Board, the trophy to be won three times, not necessarily in succession. The motion was carried. The meeting decided that there should be no alteration in the dairy cattle, Romney and Southdown sections. Same Sheep in Different Classes. The practice of entering the same sheep in more than one class in the farmers' classes was condemned by the president, who said that it was not right that the same sheep should compete in different classes. Mr. A. J. Mickleson thought that there was nothing wrong with this practice and saw no reason why the same sheep should not be entered in more than one class if they were good enough. Mr. Revell agreed with Mr. Mickleson and moved a motion to the effect that the same sheep may be entered in different classes if they are eligible. Mr. Mickleson seconded the motion. The president said that the judge, in commenting on the practice of entering the same sheep in different classes, said that the Taihape Show Committee was the most liberal he had ever come in contact with in this respect. The resolution was lost on the casting vote of the chairman, who explained to the meeting that in future the same sheep could not be entered in more than one class in the farmers’ classes. In the fat lamb and teg section it was decided that all lambs should be weighed by the stewards on show day. It was resolved that the closing date for the late entries for the show be adhered to, and that no late entries be accepted after the advertised date. It was decided that the first prize lor class 53 be increased to £5 and the second prize be £2 2s, which Mr. Ryan donated. Class 53 will be for the horse that has not won more than two first prizes at an A. and P. show at the time of competing. The president, secretary and treasurer were appointed to attend to the matter of refreshment booth. It was resolved to call for tenders from the two local publicans for the publican's booth. The meeting passed a resolution deleting the pig section Irom the schedule on account.of lack of entries in the past. SCHOOLS’ PATRIOTIC FAIR Preparations lor the schools’ patriotic fair to be held on November 2 are well advanced and indications point to a most successful function.
