DEATH OF CAPTAIN MONRO

Oct 14. ; The death has occurred of Captain Hugh Monro, chairman of the boarci of directors of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, aged 7S years. He went to sea in the maiden voyage ot the favour barque Lurline and got his first command at the age of 22 ir. the brig Rio Loge, running cargoes from New Zealand to South Africa and Mauritius and returning with , sugar, keeping to a regular time-tabie of four trips round the globe every 13 months. In 1889, with the late Mr.* A. H. Turnbull, he began to accumulate a small fleet, Captain Monro commanding such well-known vessels as the Manurewa, the Kinclure, the Timaru, the Rona. and the Durlow and sailing to America, Europe and the Baltic. With Mr. Turnbull he formed the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company in 1900 and bought steamers for the coastal trade, selling the last sailing ship, the Rona, in 1911. Captain Monro was chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board from 1931 to 1935.
