CONFERENCE TO BE HELD
GOVERNMENT AND DOCTORS GENERAL PRACTITIONER SERVICE. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 14. A date has been arranged for a conference between the Government and representatives of the British Medical Association to discuss the Health Department's proposals for the introduction of the general practitioner scheme under the Social Security Act. This was announced last night by the Minister of Health, Mr. Armstrong, when speaking at a public meeting at Waltham. The question, “When is the Government going to put Part 3 of the Social Security Act into operation?” was being asked, said the Minister. His answer was: "As soon as it is possible for me to do it. I am on the job now. The time is already arranged for meeting the representatives of the medical profession with a view to completing the whole scheme.” A voice: About time, too.
"It will be sooner than our friend could do it,” retorted Mr. Armstrong. “I am sorry it has not been accomplished before; but you will remember that it was distinctly stated in the Act that Part 3 would not operate till satisfactory arrangements were made wih the people who were to provide the service. It bristles with difficulties. A thousand and one things have to be considered before the scheme can be put into operation in a workable manner. The Government is satisfied. It is ready with its proposals. If one set is not satisfactory we are prepared to discuss another set. Any one or two of the proposals we have ready will be of immense benefit to the mass of the people of this country.” Many medical men had gone to the war, the Minister said, and it was difficult for the association to bind men serving at the other end of the world. He hoped that before long the whole scheme would be put into operation. “But if we never did any more or gave any more benefits,” he added, “the Is in the fl is the best investment you ever made in your lives.” The Minister mentioned that since the maternity scheme was operated 10 months ago, 24,506 mothers had benefited.
