GRAVER THAN IN 1917 POTENTIAL ENEMY FACED 30 DAYS MAY TELL

Stimson, supporting the Burke and Wadsworth Universal Draft Bill before the House Military Committee, said: “We are face to face with a potential enemy—Germany. A prudent trustee must consider that in another 30 days Britain may be conquered and her fleet under enemy control. “The danger is far greater than in June, 1917. Then an unbroken Allied line gave the United States time to prepare.” The Senate Military Committee has been advised that the War Department of the Budget Bureau has approved the Conscription Bill. Members consider that the bureau’s approval implies Presidential sanction. The Senate Military Committee amended the Universal Draft Bill to require registration only of men be- | tween the ages of 21 and 31 and to eliminate the provision for service in home defence units of those between the ages of 18 and 21 and 45 and 64 The House Appropriations Committee approved a Bill implementing President Roosevelt’s requests for defence authorisations on July 10 totalling 4,863,151,957 dollars for cash and contract authorisations, making 10,040,225,543 dollars available for defence expenditures in the current fiscal year. The House passed the Bill and sent ■ it to the Senate.
