ATTACK ON MALTA
F..XEMY PLANE SHOT DOWN. NO BOMBS DROPPED. Received Aug. 1. 6.5 p.m. MALTA, July 31. R.A.F. lighters shot down a fighter off Valetta when enemy planes approached Malta this morning. One of our fighters was shot down, but the pilots escaped by parachute. No bombs were dropped. GIBRALTAR HEAVILY BOMBED Received Aug. 1, 4.15 p.m. MADRID, July 31. Gibraltar was heavily bombed early this morning, explosions being heard far inland.
