FINAL COMMITTEE MEETING DATES FOR NEXT SEASON The committee of the Marton Jockey Club met on Thursday evening, Mr. H. McManaway presiding over Messrs. J. Stanford, H. T. Whale, F. Brice, H. W. Lampp, A. H. Marshall, P. W. Briant, K. R. Scoon, J. Brice, R. W. Marshall, A. T. Gatrell, and A. Way (secretary). Leave of absence was granted Messrs. J. Bull, H. J. Cameron, V. Nicholls, L. Hammond, and S. R. Hammond. A circular was received from the New Zealand Racing Owners’, Breeders’ and Trainers’ Association, stating that where a series of race meetings “follow on,” the announcement of handicaps and taking of acceptances before, instead of after, each preceding fixture, constitutes a hardship on owners and trainers as circumstances may arise wliereby horses become ineligible or unfit to race after payments are made. The association is also asking the New Zealand Racing Conference to consider an amendment to the rule governing the starting of races, whereby the starter shall have the discretionary power to adopt a “flat-footed" or “move-in" start. The committee decided in favour of the “flat-footed" start. The treasurer of the Young People’s Easter Convention wrote thanking the club for once again granting them the privilege of the *use of the club’s fine grounds and buildings for their Easter Conference and applying for the same privileges for Easter, 1941.—This was granted. On behalf of the Presbytery of Wanganui an application was received for the use of the accommodation house at the racecourse for the purpose of holding a “retreat” for ministers from May 20 to 23 (inclusive). It is expected that there will be 20 or more ministers attending.—Permission was granted to hold the “retreat” at the accommodation house. The following resignations were received: Messrs. G. Durrant (Taihape), P. H. Wood (Marton), and J. J. Morgan (Turakina). The following new members were elected: Messrs. Bruce, Tidy, T. Williams, Henry, Gaisford, and Aubone Fullerton-Smith (Marton). Three new members were also nominated. It was decided to apply for the following dates for race meetings for the 1940-41 season: Spring meeting, Saturday, September 21, 1940; summer meeting, Wednesday and Thursday, January 1 and 2, 1941. The report and balance-sheet were read and.approved of for distribution to members. The following officers retire: Patron, Dr. S. Skerman; president, Mr. H. J. D. McManaway; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. R. H. Brice, Jas. Bull, and J. R. L. Stanford; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. Brice; stewards and committee, Messrs. W. R. Duncan, L. Hammond, S. R. Hammond, H. T. Whale, and R. W. Marshall.
