FORMER HAWERA GIRL ANXIETY OF RELATIVES TRIP HOME CANCELLED HAWERA, April IL The news that the ramifications ol the Nazi war programme now affects Denmark brings with it anxiety for Mr. A. A. Brant, Fairfield Road, Hawera, whose eldest daughter. Mrs. C. Vesterby, is living at or near Copenhagen. A letter received from Mrs. VesIferby only a lew weeks ago stated I that she had received no mail from ;New Zealand since about July last. On jthe other hand, Mrs. Vesterby’s letter.. ; have been received at regular inter- ■ vals at Hawera. Marriage at Sydney Mrs. Vesterby, who was well known at Hawera as Miss Phyllis Brant before her marriage at Sydney about six years ago, is believed to be living in a Copenhagen suburb. When interviewed by a Daily News reporter yesterday, her sister, Mrs. K. B. Harrison, Fairfield Road, Hawera, said that Mrs. Vesterby's first letters from Denmark were headed Copenhagen, but more latterly with a suburban and street address. Mrs. Harrison said that the fact that her sister lived in a large block of flats would seem to indicate that she was still in the capital. Mrs. Vesterby met her husband, a Danish citizen, when he was employed as an engineer on a steamer trading to New Zealand and Australian ports. They were married at Sydney and Mrs. Vesterby travelled to Denmark. Her husband terminated his appointment at sea and accepted a position: as an inspector of ships with Lloyds, I the world-famous shipping under- | writers. At the outset; Mr. Vesterby's i work look him away on fairly con'tinuous sea travel around the Danish I coast, but since the outbreak of war his travelling was mostly on land. This arrangement was much to his wife’s relief, who in ber letters has referred .to the losses of Danish ships. Trip Cancelled Because of War Mrs. Vesterby and her five-year-old daughter, Venice, intended to visit New Zealand on holiday In October. The outbreak of war saw this arrangement cancelled, however. A significant factor relating to the i disruption of neutral shipping, is conI tained in the letter in which Mrs. j Vesterby states that she has not re-ceived-mail from Hawera since about [■July. Mrs. Harrison said yesterday II hat she had written to her sister at I monthly intervals, and had also made | an effort to dispatch special packages .in time for Christmas. So far as was I known these had not yet arrived. 'Strangely enough, Mrs. Vesterby's letters had all arrived.
