NEWS FROM MARTON

THE SECOND ECHELON ( 1 FAREWELL SUPPER TO SERGI’. ’’ A. D. GATRELL I’ 1 A representative gathering from the i’ auctioneering firms, sports, and farm- , ing community entertained Sergt. A. D. (Bill) Gatrell, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Crabb, ‘‘Pine Park,” Marton, on Thursday evening. An excellent supper was dispensed, and brief and congratulatory speeches were , made by representatives from the different associations represented assembled round the festive table. Mr. S. R. Thomson (manager for Abra- - ham and Williams, Ltd.) of which Sergt. Gatrell was a member of the : staff, in proposing the health of “Our Guest,” referred to the excellent services rendered to the firm by their guest, and also congratulated him on attaining the rank of sergeant. Other speakers were Messrs. D. Stewart, N. Egan, K. R. Scoon (auctioneers), J. Clark and A. Hutton (post and telegraph), C. C. McDonald (town clerk), K. H. Fowler, P. D. Wooton, N. T. Whale, R. W. Turner, Alf. Whale, N. Crabb and J. Crabb. The presentation of a gold-mounted fountain pen was made to Sergt. Gatrell by the promoters of the function. The recipient thanked the assemblage for the honour accorded him and also for their flattering remarks. He had enjoyed his association with the firms, and he hoped that he would be able to uphold the traditions of the army whilst doing his “bit” at the front, remarks which were greeted with “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow." The evening was spent in song and story, and a most pleasant evening concluded in the early hours of the morning by returning thanks to the promoters, and to Mr. and Mrs. N. Crabb for placing their home at his disposal. Sergt. Gatrell, who has just completed a tour of the Rotorua thermal districts with Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Gatrell, leaves for overseas with the Second Echelon, and will carry with him the best wishes of all his friends for a successful career and a safe return to New Zealand. CIVIC THEATRE “YOU CAN’T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN” Hilarious comedy sequences deftly woven into a powerful story stamp Universal’s “You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man” as one of the year’s best offerings. Heading the cast of the picture, which will be shown finally this afternoon and evening at the Civic Theatre, are W. C. Fields, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. They are rated as Hollywood's top comedy combination—and they certainly live up to their reputation! Highlighting the film, as you might suspect, is the bitter feud between Fields and his wooden nemesis, McCarthy. Their battle reaches new heights of potency and comedy in “You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man.” REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET RANGITIKEI DEFEAT FEILDING A Rangitikei representative team visited Feilding on Saturday, and in perfect weather and on a good pitch, on Kowhai Park, the visitors defeated Feilding by 43 runs on the first innings. Feilding responded with 111, Packer 34 and Whitehead 32, being the leading batsmen. Rangitikei in their second strike had compiled 142 runs for eight wickets when stumps were drawn.
