RAETIHI BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING (Own Correspondent) RAETIHI, March 23. Dr. W. J. Feltham presided over the monthly meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council, held on Tuesday. Also present were Crs. A. E. Urwin, F. B. Soar, H. J. Donnelly, J. R. Ciochetto, R. B. Davies, the town clerk (Mr. C. M. Turner), the electrical engineer (Mr. W. Journeaux), and the works foreman (Mr. E. C. Davis). Correspondence A letter from the Centennial branch of the Internal Affairs Department advised that the Raetihi Centennial Memorial had been duly approved. The approval, however, related only to the subject matter of the memorial. Advice concerning the actual plan would be received by the council in due course. The Social Security Department stated that scheme 13 could not be extended to cover cemetery clearing, which was in the nature of an essential work. The council, however, was granted permission to extend its authority under this scheme to tree planting on streets and borough reserves. The monthly report of the sanitary inspector revealed a generally satisfactory state of affairs and was received. The Raetihi Chamber of Commerce complained of inconsistencies in the times of lighting and extinguishing the community lights in the main street. The electrical engineer stated that it was only pressure of work which caused such inconsistencies, which couid be simply adjusted from time to time by telephoning the electrical department. The borough always endeavoured to adjust the times of lighting and extinction as seasons changed. It was decided to advuse the chamber accordingly. The Chamber of Commerce also emphasised that the proposed road deviation over Maori Hill was becoming a matter of urgency and did not appear to be progressing to any noticeable extent. The town clerk stated that difficulties had been met with in that the deviation as originally planned was too close to the native church. This had | been adjusted and the council was awaiting a plan from the surveyor instructed to act. A decision was made to request the surveyor to expedite the matter. The Hon. Frank Langstone stated j that he had referred to a Ministerial ; colleague the council’s request that double gates and paths be provided ’ for the five Government houses in Raetihi now nearing completion, The Housing Department’s policy at pres- . ent was that the building of houses ' was the urgent necessity and the erection of garages, paths, etc., must i give way to this necessity in the ' meantime. I His Worship: That’s that! i The purpose of the council’s request I was to permit easy access of lorries I carrying loads of 4ft. timber to the I houses. I Mr. W. S. Waring wrote stating I that the recent flood had inundated his garden at the corner of Ballance i and Pitt Streets and asked the council to go into the matter of cleani ing the stream in this vicinity. The Works Committee advised that a wilI low tree in the stream was a major ’ cause of the trouble and this defect ! was being remedied. To clean out the whole stream would result in an : unwarranted expense on ratepayers at the present time. The matter was 1 left in the hands of the Works Com--1 mittee. »
