WAR-TIME EASTER IN BRITAIN
EXCEPTIONALLY HEAVY RAIL TRAFFIC. LONDON, March 24. An unexpected feature of the first war-time Easter has been the exceptionally heavy rail traffic, which to Friday on all main lines was up to and in some cases exceeded normal Easter passenger standards. Th* booking from London constituted a record for the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway. The receipts as a whole are twice those of Easter, 1938. Motor traffic is inevitably smaller, because of the petrol rationing. A great increase in the number of pedalcyclists is recorded. To-day the exodus from London continued, resulting in two main lines serving mainly southern and western areas breaking previous Easter traffic records. Road traffic continued below normal. .. The increased railway traffic Is attributed to people entraining who ‘. otherwise used cars.
