The Roper 1 River mission station was destroyed and the mission lugger was lost. Many small settlements are flooded and groups of settlers who have taken refuge on isolated high grounds may soon be desperately short of foed. Some residents fleeing for their lives before floodwaters had also to face the hazard of gales and croco-1 diles. Crocodiles, leaving the rivers j with the floodwaters, threshed round i small boats in which settlers were escaping and dragged down stork which ■ they were trying tn savp.
