LOSS OF THE ARENDSKERK

STOPPED BY GERMAN SUBMARINE Received Jan. 18. 9.5 p.m. LISBON. Jan. 17. The captain of the Arendskerk stated that they encountered a hail of bullets from the submarine. which commanded him to stop. The first officer was aboard the submarine with the ship's papers. The captain of the submarine offered a cigarette and said it was a pity to sink such a good ship but the cargo was contraband, inasmuch as it was ll bound for South Africa, which was an wemy country. “The submarine towed our boat back and gave us half an hour to leave in the boats.” said the captain. “We saw, 30 minutes later, the whoie deck, masts and cargo blown up and the Arendskerk sinking in pieces. The Pedora picked us up two hours later. We lost everything but our clothing.”
