TAIHAPE INCIDENT CHARGE AGAINST DROVER The sequel to a happening at Colliers Junction, near Taihape, on December 27, when two shots were fired at a cottage occupied by William George Hagen, roadman, employed by the Rangitikei County Council, and his wife, Ethel Charlotte Cordes Hagen, was held in Taihape Court yesterday, when Roy Gane Walley, drover and insurance agent, married, aged 37, of Ruru Pvoad, Taihape, was charged that with intent to intimidate or annoy alarm, or attempt to alarm Hagen and his wife in their dwellinghouse by night, he discharged a .303 rifle. Walley was also charged with causing to be received by Roy Alexander Hagen, Miramar, Wellington, a letter containing threats to do grievous bodily harm to William George Hagen, father of Roy Hagen. Mr. Hugh Johnston, J.P., occupied the Bench. Mr. R. C. Ongley appeared for the accused. Detective-Sergeant J, K. Robertson. r of Wanganui, appeared for the police and asked that. Walley be remanded , to appear at Taihape on January 26 i and the application was granted. Mr. R. C. Ongley asked for bail for . the accused. > Detective - Sergeant Robertson . pointed out that accused was not bailable as of right, but t at the discretion of the Court. He requested that hail be substantial in view of the serious charges, and that a condition be that Walley refrain from visiting the vicin- ] ity of Hagan’s cottage at Collier’s } Junction. Mr. Ongley agreed to this condition and accused was granted bail in his own recognisance of £250 and one ! surety of £250, a condition being that he refrain from visiting the vicinity . of Collier’s Junction. The police are continuing their investigations into the happening under the direction of Detective-Sergeant J. K. Robertson and Detective-Sergeant G. G. Kelly, arms expert of Wellington, assisted by members of the Taihape force. Two bullet holes were discovered in the wall of Mr. Hagan’s bedroom.
