MARTON NEWS

DOUBLE FEATURE PROGRAMME AT THE CIVIC “WOMEN ARE LIKE THAT” Proving herself to be one of the screen’s most delightful comediennes, in addition to her other talents, Kay Francis gives one of her best performances in “Women Are Like That,” finally showing to-night (Friday) at the Civic Theatre. It is delightful comedy, not so frothy that it isn’t warmly, touchingly human at times, and yet so gay that the spectator has never a let-down of spirits. “The Grace Allen Murder Case” The insane detective work of Grade Allen, the shrewd, suave deductions of Philo Vance, the efforts of a girl to free the man she loves from prison when he is accused of murder, and the clever plotting of a girl who loved the murdered man serve to motivate the new Paramount, comedy mystery, S. S. Van Dine’s “The Gracie Allen Murder Case,” which will be finally screened to-night (Friday) at the Civic Theatre. RANGITIKEI CRICKET SATURDAY’S MATCHES The Rangitikei Cricket Association’s fixtures for to-morrow are:— Old Boys v. Marton, at Marton. Taihape Railway v. Porewa, at Taihape. Hunterville v. Ohakea Air Force, at Hunterville. Taihape a bye. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE CENTENNIAL BABY CARNIVAL MORE ENTRIES WANTED Latest information received in Marton concerning the St. John Ambulance Centennial Baby Carnival is to the effect that the cameraman Mr. Lee Hill will be revisiting the town on Monday, January 29, to “shoot” the remaining babies to fill Marton’s quota of 100. So far the quota is short by 42 babies, but is expected that entries will be speeded up now that the date of the cameraman's visit to Marton is fixed. The reason for the campaign is an effort by the Order of St. John to raise £50,000 to provide much-needed equipment and accommodation for the carrying out of a service to the public which makes very heavy demands on this voluntary organisation. After many years in which much of their leisure has been given up to public service, the officials of St. John are now putting in sogje extra time for the good of their It is typical of the St. John people that they are asking the public to support a fund which will enable greater service to be given to the public. Substantial prizes amounting to £25 are being offered locally for the bonniest babies. In addition to the first three prizes it is proposed to offer weekly prizes of £1 Is, and as it is anticipated that the voting in Marton will last for a month there will probably be four of these. The best six babies selected in Marton will be entered in the West Coast district competition and maybe one of these little ones will be lucky enough to be included in the North Island competi-

tion. Entries close in Marton on Saturday, January 27, with the manager of the Civic Theatre, Mr. G. Hogan, from whom entry forms and fuller information can be obtained. Screening of the baby movie films will commence on Monday, February 5, when picture-theatre audiences will have an opportunity of voting. Details of how the voting is conducted will be announced later, but. at the present time more babies are required to fill Marton’s quota.
