RAILWAY PROMOTION

FORMER OFFICER IN WANbAMJI TRANSPORT SUPERINTENDENT MR. A. L. SMITH’S POSITION The promotion of Mr. A. L. Smith, district traffic manager at Wellington, to the position of transport superintendent of the New Zealand Railways, is announced. Mr. Smith was formerly assistant traffic manager at Wanganui and was transferred to his Wellington position at the end of 1938. Mr. Smith replaces Mr. G. T. Wilson, who retires on superannuation on January 22 after 41 years' service with the Railways Department. He . joined the department as a cadet in 1903 and has had experience in traffic work at many stations in the South . Island. He was with the New Zealand Forces during the Great War. From 1927 to 1930 Mr. Smith was inspector of the refreshment branch and then became wagon supply officei in the district traffic manager's office in Christchurch. In 1932 he was ap- . pointed stationmaster at Greymoutn, and in 1933 goods agent in Christchurch. Mr. Smith was acting chief clerk in the commercial branch in Wellington in 1935 and 1936, and In 1937 was promoted to Wanganui as ' assistant traffic manager. Mr. Wilson joined the department 1 in Dunedin as a cadet. He came to headquarters in 1917 and from 1921 ‘ to 1928 he was associated with the ’ commercial branch as chief clerk and * senior business agent and represented J the department at a number of conferences of the Associated Chambers 1 of Commerce, New Zealand Farmers • Union and other organisations. He introduced the system of inter-island ' through booking of goods and parcels 1 and the present system of reservation 1 of seats. From 1932 to 1935 he was district ‘ traffic manager in Auckland and was 1 then appointed to the post he now 1 relinquishes. A large gathering of 1 railway officers farewelled him and 1 tributes were paid by the general ‘ manager and his executives, a presentation was made of a china cab- 1 inet and easy chair with nest wishes 1 for his future welfare.
