DOUBLE DROWNING
TRAGEDY IN AKAROA HARBOUR MAN AND SON DIE WHEN BOAT CAPSIZES [Per Prees Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 18. A married man and his younger . son were drowned after their homemade boat had sunk about 200 yards j from shore in Akaroa Harbcur yesterday. The other occupants of the boat, an elder son, his mother, and a Maori lad, reached shore safely. < The victims were: — Andrew James Dykes, agod 36. company manager, Cholmondeley Road, Opawa. Kenneth Edward Dykes, aged 5i years, his younger son. The tragedy occurred at a small in- ; let. The family, who were camping , at Wainui, had been fishing in the bay from their motor-boat which was home-made of iron and had a motorcar engine. They reached the entrance of the bay on the return journey when trouble developed and the boat overturned. The elder son, James, aged 14 or 15, assisted his mother to shore, and the Maori boy, W. Timothy, sw«m to safety.
BODY RECOVERED RIVERTON DROWNINGS DRAGGING OPERATIONS ( Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 18. The body of Marjorie Corbett second victim of the Riverton drowning, was recovered early to-day after dragging operations.
