TROTTING

WANGANUI CLUB Well-Balanced Fields To-morrow I STRONG VISITING TEAMS : EARLY REVIEW OF PROSPECTS ‘ ( (By “Abaydos.”) A feature of the fields for the first 1 day of the Wanganui Trotting Club’s i meeting, which opens to-morrow and 1 concludes on Monday (Anniversary Day) is the very large percentage of horses handicapped who have paid up. This is particularly noticeable and also pleasing as regards horses from Auckland and the South Island. The northern contingent remains very solid, including Tsana, Amywyn and Cheudic, well fancied candidates in the Wanganui Handicap, and in j addition to Amywyn, Grand Finale ( and Envious are in the “second leg,’’ j the Morton Memorial Handicap. ( Chudic has done most of his recent racing as a trotter with a good £ measure of success, but it is to be remembered that before changing over he was a very line two-mile pacer. Tsana raced at the last Auckland meeting, displaying real staying qualities that will make him hard to beat. Amywyn was unplaced at two miles but no discredited, as she set the pace in a fast run race. She has splendid credentials at middle journey and reads quite at home in the mile and aquarter. Envious, now in Stewart's stables, ran solid races last year at Greymouth and Nelson and his win at the latter meeting showed him to be a sprinter of no mean ability. The [chestnut is likely to be improved milder Stewart’s guidance and he will be well suited in the Morton Memorial Handicap. A smart beginner in Grand Finale will set the rest a lively pace and if he can hold on to the bitter end may cause the downfall of the favourite. An easy track would enhance his prospects. Form of Kewpie’s Jewel. Of those in the minor events Bin gen’s Best won nicely at Cambridge, and in her excellent condition lias prospects of increasing her earnings Prior to her success her best effort was at the last Wanganui meeting. Kewpie’s Jewel, although unplaced last Saturday at Cambridge, has recently been three times second, put- : ting up a line performance on each ■ occasion. Purchased by a patron oi Slewart's stables after she last raced ■ at Cambridge, Kewpie’s Jewel will make her initial appearance for the Te Rapa trainer, who is building up a : line record of wins with horses he produces the first time up. Young Parry, a former Stewart ] representative, was responsible for a ■ line effort in being second to Nar- ; bada in the Captain Cook Handicap i and should be benefited by the race ■ and may give E. N. Kennerley an i early return. Llanvabon has raced mainly as a trotter, last year winning several events, but in other races gave mixed displays. In the spring F. J. Smith i raced him as a pacer when he showed a good deal of promise to finish second j in the Campbell Handicap after a ■ very slow beginning. Captain Scott’s iorm last season

, was of a very useful nature, indicating that he would reach a high standard with more racing. At Hawera he won the Palea Handicap oil a 3.1 mark in 2.47. By Jack Potts—Bessie Logan. Captain Scott has excellent breeding. Solid Novice I’acers. The novice contingent represents a very useful lot with Neon Oro having earned sufficient in place money to gain a 12-yards penalty. The Key de Oro —Modern Light mare has three seconds to her credit this term and a little improvement will give her a good chance to leave £:e maiden ranks. Maratua has minor placings to her credit and one of her best efforts was in following her stable-mate Excel, who was second to Repose at Hamilton, home for third money. Racing should be playing its part . with the Peter Bingen mare. Winter, < in the same stable, is also a product of 1 Peter Bingen, but she has not had quite as much experience as Mara- . tua. She has a good turn of speea . which may be very useful when she ; develops race confidence. Scotty direct gave a lot of promise ; earlier in the season but a misnap put • her off the scene for some time. He reappeared at Cambridge, where lie ran a fair race, on which he should soon improve. Blue Crest is gaining experience and may soon reveal his good track efforts in a race. Del Potts is a good looking mare, may not be long in showing form. Bournemouth only joined Kenner- : ley's stable a few weeks ago and was • not ready when he raced at Epsom. He is an aged gelding by Nelson Bingen—Cammic, and may develop into a useful trotter. Taken all over the fields are pur- : ticularly well-balanced and given line weather the Wanganui Club should ! enjoy a most successful meeting. An innovation this year is that ladies are being admitted free. The totalisator will be run on the single pool system and the first race starts at 12.15 ; p.m. Arrangements have been made to have the Trentham race results broadcast at the racecourse during ' the trotting meeting to-morrow and Monday.
