DUNEDIN WOOL

APPRAISEMENT VALUES CLIP WaS INCLINED TO BE PATCHY [ter Press A-socia’aon. j DUNEDIN, Dec. 21. Appraisements in connection with the Imperial wool-purchase scheme have been proceeding since Monday and the final catalogues were dealt with to-day. Combined brokers brought forward catalogues totalling 21,431 bales and within a few days it is expected that full instructions will Te issued for the wools which have to be shipped to the United Kingdom. Local mills have also been busy selecting their requirements, and have been allocating their quantities. The clip, on the whole, although for the most part of good colour, was somewhat patchy and was much lighter in condition than was the case last year. A fair proportion of the wool showed signs of severe weathering, but the bulk of the clip exhibited was of better quality than was generally anticipated. High country wool showed the effect of the severe winter, with its unusual snows, and the staple was weaker and lacked its usual length. Crossbred hoggets from the south, uhere the sheep were well wintered, were sound and of good colour, whereas in other districts the fibre was inclined to show tenderness. The general get-up of th? clips was satisfactory, but some growers are still leaving fleece wool unskirted. In these cases brokers found it necessary to unroll fleeces and skirt in order that the various types could be priced according to the schedule. In Merinos the Puketoi clip again commanded top price. 193 d, which was paid for three lots. Some very attractive lines of super fine halfbreds were offered. One four-bale lot carried the brand TC/Strathctyde, and was appraised at 19*d. The top price for halfbred in New Zealand to-day. The second appraisement for Dunedin is listed for January. 1940.
