That a mechanical bulldozer could carry out road works at a third of the cost of manual labour was mentioned by the county engineer, Mr. R. R. Dawson, at yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui County Council in answer to a question from Cr. T. Mitchell. Mr. Dawson said that on the Wangaehu Valley Road recently a slip which would have cost £3O lo remove by hand was cleared in five and a half hours at a cost of £6 17s 6d. Cr. Mitchell considered that when finances permitted it would be a good investment for the council to purchase a bulldozer. "Even though it might, spend some time in the shed it would probably be a good insurance against, slips,” he said. The engineer suggested that if the council ever secured a bulldozer it should buy a dual purpose machine, a bulldozer and loader. Such a machine would cost approximately 12<»<)<>.
