-o HOTELKEEPER FINED ; [ Per Press Association J GISBORNE, Dec. 4. An understatement of income involving £324 over five years was the basis of five charges against Herbert Askew. hotelkeeper of To Araroa, heard by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Defendant was fined £lO2 and costs £4 10s. Mr. F. W. Nolan, for the Commissioner of Taxes, said that an examination of the books revealed a systematic suppression of receipts, monies being put away in defendant's and his wife's names without being recorded. As a result of the understatement of income during the past five years, tax totalling £Bl2 had been underpaid, which defendant had since paid. Counsel for defendant attributed the position to negligence rather than wilful suppression. Defendant haa entered the takings daily and had handed the books to an accountant in Ruatoria io handle.
