WIN FOR ST. .JOHN’S TEAM MATCH WITH WANGANUI EAST Playing in the A grade inter-club tennis competition for Ihe first time, the Wanganui East Club put up a creditable performance against St. John’s. Although St. John’s won by 15 matches to one it should be noted that five matches went the full three sets. Results were as follow, St. John’s players being mentioned first:— Men’s Singles.—F. Thompson beat L. Tippins, 2-6- 6-2, 6-4; M. L. Lampe beat A. Walker, 6-1, 8-8 (rtd.); J. Kearney beat D. Munro, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4; J. Connett beat S. Ambrose, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Women’s Singles.—Miss M. Clark beat Miss L. K. Ede, 6-1, 6-1; Miss O. Glover beat Mrs. R. Bigham, 6-2, 6-1; Miss I. Glover beat. Mrs. A. Mackey, 6-3, 6-2; Miss E. Fitches lost to Mrs. L. Tippins, 6-1, 6-4. Men’s Doubles. Thompson anrl Lampe beat Tippins and Ambrose. 6-2. 6-3; Kearney and Connett beat Munro and Walker 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Women’s Doubles. Misses M. Clarke and E. Fitches beat Mrs. L. Tippins and Mrs. R. Bigham. 6-1, 1-6, 6-2; Misses O. and I. Glover beat Mrs. A. Mackey and Miss L. K. Ede, 6-0, 8-6. Combined Doubles. - Lampe and Miss Clark beat Tippins and Mrs. Bigham, 6-4, 6-4; Thompson and Miss O. Glover beat Walker and Mrs. Mackey 6-2, 6-2; Connett and Miss Fitches heat Munro and Miss Ede, 6-2, 6-0; Kearney and Miss I. Glover won by default from Ambrose and Mrs. Tippins. Matches Postponed. The C grade fixtures, St. Barnabas v. Wanganui East, and St. John’s v. Wanganui East, were not played on Saturday because of rain. The Public Service tournament was postponed because of w’et weather and the women’s doubles will be played during this week.
