i COLLEGIATE LEADS T. 0.8. f I SENIOR GRADE COMPETITION FINE BATTING DISPLAYS ) i i I Cricket at its best, with ideal play- . I ing conditions and line performances, J marked the opening of the first series • | of matches in the Wanganui Crickci . Association’s senior grade competition] .I on Sat urday afternoon. Wickets on j - both Cook’s Gardens and the Colle-1 ’ giate ground were in exce.lent condi- ’ lion, being neither fast nor slow. Collegiate provided the greatest sur--5 prise of the day by securing a lead of 11 runs on the first innings over Technical Old Boys, in an extremely ' i low scoring match. On Cook's Gardens, [ Wanganui compiled a substantial first , innings score o£ 259 against Marist, but the latter team was in a healthy position at the close of play, with no t wickets down, for 57. Similarly, Tech' nical College made the cerdiiable totai of 142 in the first strike against t United, which at stumps had lost two wickets for 78. Honours Board. H Batting. S. T. TECHNICAL OLD BOYS Weak running between wickets was largely responsible for Ihe low scoring m the match between Collegiate and Technical Old Boys, holders of the championship. Both A. Renshaw and C. E. Nairn, second highest scorers for Coih-gi?ite with 17, were run out, and Technical Old Boys lost. ■ no fewer than lour wickets and the lead the same way. Batting first, Collegiate compiled 93, , IR. F. Mackie tup-scoring with 24. Bowling for Technical Old Boys, R, E. Thomas, in addition to taking three wickets for 16 runs with his mediumpace deliveries, proved an ideal foil lor A. Guthrie, slow left-hander, who i look three for 17. ' After receiving a fair stair irom M. Dallison, Thomas and L. Connor, technical Old Boys faded badly in their innings, and failed by 11 runs to . reach Collegiate’s total. The school ' team owed its success to C. M. Hockin, I who took live wickets for 21. Cillcgiatc. First Inning;'. R. C. Gibbon, run out. 5 C. E. Nairn, c Thompson, b Thomas . . 17 A. In scoring 65, Bickley hit two sixers and nine fours, and made 50 in 46 minutes. E. Neale, was the third highest scorer with 41 not out. Undaunted by Wanganui’s formidable total of 259, Marist made a fine start, the opening batsmen L. Jones and S. Wallace, being unbeaten at stumps, with the score 57. VVangaiiui. First Innings. I K. UNITED For a very young and inexperienced team, Technical College made quite a good showing against United, one of the strongest club teams, in the first innings. S. Nimmo, playing senior cricket for his first season, batted very ! promisingly to score 31, and B. Dow’s 24 is also worthy of mention. Keeping an immaculate length, E. C. Geo headed United’s howling honours with five wickets for 37 runs. United started their innings well, but D. McCarthy served Technical College well by taking both R. J. Sewell and E. C. Gee’s wickets cheaply. L. A. Wood treat€-d the bowling with scant, respect, however, and was undefeated at stumps with 48 to his credit. Technical Uollrge. First Innings. K.
