RAETIHI BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING HELD (Own Correspondent). RAETIHI, Oct. 13. The usual montnly meeting of th? Raetihi Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Hi.s Worship tne Mayor (Dr. W. j. Feltham) presided. Others present were Crs. A. E. Urwin F. Soar, H. J. Donnelly, T. Shout, the town clerk (Mr. C. M. Turner), electrical engineer (Mr. W. Journeaux), and borough foreman (Mr. E. C. Davis). The following business was transacted:— Public Works Grant—The Public Works Department advised the council that the sum of £5OO appeared on the estimates in connection with work on the Pipiriki-Ruetihi-Ohakune mam highway.—Received. Road Deviation.—Mr. A. H. Bogie intimated that he had been over tne ground of the proposed road deviation at the eastern end (Maori Hill) of the township, with Mr. Allison, P.W.D. engineer. The latter hopeu soon to decide on the final line.—Received. The Raetihi File Brigade invited the council to be represented at the “christening” of the new lire engine. —Received. The Raetihi Centennial Committee acknowledged with thanks the borough’s donation of £25 to its funds. Mr. J. J. Jones (Ohakune Dairy Company) asked that he be allowcu discount of an electricity account which had not been paid on the due date owing to his being an inmate of the Wellington Hospital.—The council, after consideration, decided to advise the applicant that the discount could not be granted. Emergency Precautions Scheme. The Minister of Internal Affairs asked for the co-operation of the council in the formation of a local committee to function along suggested lines. — The council decided that it would offer io co-operate with the Waimarino County Council in the matter. A subcommittee consisting of Crs. Urwin, Soar, and Donnelly, and the council’s executive officers would meet representatives of the County Council to study the scheme as outlined and prepare a scheme suitable lor locai needs. Ward Street. Cr. Shout stated that in order to improve and complete the job of surfacing Ward Street it was necessary to procure a supply of metai chips.-3 he council authorised that this be done. Health Officer’s Report.—The health officer (Mr. W. H. Roy) submitted a comprehensive report upon work undertaken by himself during the [month. Of particular interest were hi.s remarks concerning tne Raetihi water supply. They were as follows. “Sample was taken and forwarded for bacteriological examination. J his sample was taken from the Mukotuku Stream at tne borough intake on September 20, when, alter several weeks ot flood conditions, the water levee was near normal winter level and comparatively clear. Despite the cleansing effect tne floods would have, the results of the examination showed that some contamination was still present. I propose to take a series of samples throughout the coming summer to ascertain the amount, ui polluticn present at various periods of the year. The report was received. Libraiy Committee.- -The Library Committee decided to defer its next meeting till February, 1940, in view of the council’s decision to defer consideration of the utilisation of the country library service until the next, financial year. Sunday Picture Committee. 3he town clerk reported that, he had io ceived the resignation of Mr. L. A. Eastman (secretary) from the Sunday Picture Committee. As there were now two resignations that left only one member of the committee in office. 11 was pointed out that this committee met with three representatives of the council, to allocate the funds derived from the showing of Sunday pictures. 'rhe Mayor: We can only come to the conclusion that the Sunday Picture Committee has become defunct. It cannot function with one man. To meet the situation that had arisen the council passed the following motion: That in view of the apparent disbanding of the Sunday Picture Committee, the licence to show Sunday pictures be transferred to a subcommittee appointed by the council, comprising His Worship tlw Mayor, Um deputy-Mayor and the town clerk, who shall be empowered to control the allocation of the net proceeds. The council then elected a Health Camp Committee. comprising the Mavor of Raetihi. the deputy-Mayvr, the* headmaster n( the Raetihi School, the postmaster of Raetihi, and the town clerk. Such a body, stated the Mayor, would ensure a continuity oi service and effort. DOMAIN BOARD A meeting of Ibe Raetihi Domain Board was held on Tuesday evening and presided over by Dr. W. J. Feltham. .. The Minister of Lands (Hon. r. Langstone I advised the board that a grant of £25 had been authorised towards the cost of improvements at the camp site, in the nature of a washroom. The work was ordered to be proceeded with immediately. Mr Shout stated that metal chips were necessary for the purpose o£ asphalting the roadway into the site. This would abate the water and duSt nuisance. The hoard authorised this work to be done.
