LAWN TENNIS CLlfl L ANNUAL MEETING HELD (Own Correspondent) PATEA, Oct. 13. Mr. T. E. Roberts presided over an excellent attendance of members and intending members at the annual meeting of the Patea Lawn Tennis 1 Club on Thursday. The annual report stated inter alia that the past season had been most successful, although inclement weather during December and Januaryhad made conditions unpleasant for i playing, favourable conditions later j enabling the various activities of the . club to be brought to a successful conJ elusion. A “B” team had entered in ; the southern division and had been i successful in winning, putting up a very tine performance in not losing I match. ' The retiring president. Mr. T. E. ' Roberts, who has been connected with i the club for over 19 years, was elected a life member of tne club as a mark ; of appreciation of his services. The election of officers tor the coming season resulted: President. Mr. I G. Francis; vice-presidents, Messrs, i H. A. Boswell, E. C. Whitehead, and ' S. Jury; secretary and treasurer, Mr. i J. Elliott; executive committee, Messrs Richards. Edwards, E. Cousins, and Misses B. Wilson and S. Campbell; auditor. Mr. S. Edwards; club captain, Mr. Richards; delegates, Messrs ■ Richards and Francis. New members elected were Miss Gwen Eddie and Messrs E. Sicely and ■ L. Greave. The resignations of Misses N. Hurley and J. Clark were received. It was agreed that all members in camp be honorary members of the club while they remain at the service of the country. Misses B. Wilson and S. Campbell were appointed to make I he afternoon tea arrangements. The matter of opening day was left left in the hands of the committee.. It was decided that the secretary ' send a note to each member asking if I they desired to continue their mem- : bership or resign, and stating that if ! a reply was not received within seven I days their membership would lapse. It was agreed that the incoming committee be recommended to substitute a levy of 2 6 on all members for refreshments, instead of the present system of plates, except on club ked cross society. ! Mr. L. R. Davies presided over an I attendance of over b 0 at a meeting held tn the Alton Hall this week lor the purpose of forming a sub-centre ol the New Zealand Red Cross I Sovietv. The chairman introduced the president of the Patea executive I P.ev W. H. Walton, who sta.ed th>. aims and objects ol the society. It was agreed that a branch be formed in Alton. Mr. L. R. Davies being appointed president and Mr. A. ivey secretary. . Mrs A. A. Carey gave an interesting talk on the reactions of civilians in London during the last wt-e am. the important part women must play in bringing about universal peace. A meeting of the executive ot the Patea branch of the Red Cross .Societ y was held in the County Council Chambers, Ihe Rev. W. H. Walton presid - ing It was decided to hold a card pai-ty at an early'date in aid of the society funds. A meeting of instruc--1 tors is to be held shortly to make arrangements for home nursing and lirst-aid classes. LOCAL MI SKAL SUCCESSES. Dr. M. 11. Walt. Director-General of Health, accompanied by Dr. D. D. Cook, health officer for the Palmerston North health area, which extends as far as Patea and Hawke's Bay, visited Patea during the week. They visited the hospital and conferred with the chairman and members ot the Patea Hospital Board. The C. R.
