WANGANUI POLICE CHIEF DUE TO RETIRE
SUPERINTENDENT J. LANDER FORTY YEARS’ SERVICE WITH THE FORCE Superintendent J. Lander, head of the Wanganui police district, who is at present on annual leave, is due to retire about the end of the year. He will return from leave this month, and it is understood that he will go on retiring leave almost immediately. Superintendent Lander, who came to Wanganui in 1933 With the rank 01. inspector, joined the police force in 1899 at Palmerston North. He accompanied the Prince of Wales and Duke and Duchess of York on their tours of the Dominion, and, in recognition of his services on those occasions, was awarded the Royal Victorian Medai After serving at Palmerston North h? was stationed at Foxton and subsequently, for a short time, to Napier, after which he had charge at Te Awamutu for about eight years. In 1915 he was appointed sectional sergeant at Auckland, and in 1921, as senior-sergeant, he went to Wellington, where he was promoted to the rank of sub-inspector. On April 1, 1930, he was promoted to the rank of inspector and was attached to headquarters staff as relieving inspector throughout the Dominion. He was promoted superintendent at the beginning of this year and, as he was close to retirement, remained in charge of the Wanganui district instead of moving to a metropolitan centre. Superintendent Lander has been a popular officer in Wanganui. He joined the Wanganui Bowling Club and has taken a keen interest in the game.
