HARASSED COUNTRY
COLLECTION OF RATES DELAY FROM REVALUATION PALMERSTON N., Oct. 12. The Manawatu County Council has been advised that the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, will not agree to special legislation being brought down to Jessen the time in which a 10 per cent, penalty on rates would Operate. In view ot the revaluation of the county the council has not been able to impose the penalty this year and representations were made for special legislation to be passed to enable this to be done. The advice stated that the matter had been given full consideration, but for reasons that need not be entered into at the moment the council's application could not bo agreed to. In the view of the fact that the'revaluation of the county has not been brought to a conclusion and that the amounts of the individual rate demand cannot yet be fix»d, the council decided to appeal to ratepayers to make advance payments. It was pointed out that the hank overdraft was rising and that, interest moneys ; to be paid were depleting the council's ; funds. The payments are to carry a I discount ot 5 per cent. The ratepayers arc to be told that unless cooperation is received the council may ■be seriously embarrassed and will ‘ have to curtail its programme of works.
