SOWING OF WHEAT
RESPONSE BY FARMERS OTAGO MAKING GOOD EFFORT DUNEDIN, Oct. 12. A genuine effort is being made by farmers to.fall in line with the Government's request to sow more wheat, with the result that to-day the Otago sowings are much greater than they promised to he a month ago. The acreage set down will equal that ot last year. n i severity of the winter retarnc : all farm work to such an exter/ til at wheat sowings fell well behind, and at the beginning of September it seemed certain that the amount sown in Otago would be very much less than usual. The Government's appeal stirred farmex-s to make an effort to rectify this situation and they were helped in their determination by tne sudden improvement in the weather, the conditions becoming ide,l for drilling and sowing. The wheat season thus promises well. Oats are not being sown to as great an extent as last year, but the demand for this cereal has fallen awry considerably.
