REGENT THEATRE
NEWSBOYS’ HOME” Offering Jackie Cooper a powerful dramatic role in his first starring feature, Universal’s production of “Newsboys’ Home” opens to-day at the Regent. Theatre, with Edmund Lowe, Wendy Barrie, Edward Norris, Samuel S. Hinds, and the Little Tough Guys. Recently seen as the romantic lead opposite Deanna Durbin in the hit film “That Certain Age,” Cooper’s newest screen venture reveals him as a homeless country boy who comes to a big city and is forced to seek his livelihood selling pipers on a street corner. How he battled his way to the leadership of his newsboy pals, the Little Tough Guys, and proves his loyalty to the publisher of his paper, is a stirring human document of a boy who has the courage to fight for his ideals. Among the popular performers in the strong supporting cast are Edmund Lowe, as the city editor, Wendy Barrie as the girl he loves, and Edward Norris, expert portrayer of gangster roles, as the man who murdered Coo*t?r’s father. Samuel S. Hinds, who scored in Frank Capra’s “You Can’t Take it With You,” is ideally cast as the kindly publisher who supports the “Newsboys’ Home.” The associate feature, “Warning,” covers the period of the September crisis of last year, showing in striking scenes England’s preparation to resist the menace of the dictato” powers. The Army, the Navy and the Royal Air Force are portrayed in turn, and armament factories in full production add to the arresting scenes. To-night there will be a full parade of Wanganui territorials, headed by the band of the WellingtonWest Coast Regiment, and all in uniform will be the guests of the management.
