WAITOTAKA MAORI BRANCH OF 1 THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY PARTY' The firsl birthday parly of lhe Ngarauru Women’s Institute was held 1 recently at the lliupuku Pa in the < large Maori meeting house. It was ] a most successful function and the Maori members are to be congratu- < lated on the arrangements made to < entertain the large gathering, there ’ being over 70 present, about 50 being ( visitors, including a number of Aramoho, Maxwell, Patca and Pariroa i members. The meeting house looked very at- I tractive with the many hand-made ; flax baskets of ferns, and on the long < table, which had been set. for after- ] noon tea, were baskets of ferns and ■ fruit, delicious sandwiches and cakes. ' In the centre was the beautiful birth- ( day cake (with its one candle), which . had been made and iced in Women’s , Institute colours by Mrs. Flyger, of . the Aramoho branch. t Mrs. Mihaka, president, welcomed visitors and members and made t special mention of the Aramoho Wo- ( men’s Institute choir. who had , travelled to Waitotara by bus to give 1 a musical programme, and to Mrs. , Flyger for making the lovely cako. Mrs. Gray (vice-president of the , Federation of Women’s Institutes) apologised for the absence oi Mrs. Shanks (federation president), who was unable to attend and, on her lirhalf. congratulated the branch on at- ( taining its first birthday and hoped the coming year would be a happy . and successful one. . Mrs. Morrison (Maxwell). Mrs. Gould (Aramoho). members of Patea . and Pararoa branches also spoke and extended greetings. Musical items, given by Aramoho members, action sonis by local Maori eirls. and a solo by Mrs. Rahera Apou were all much enjoyed and applauded. At the conclusion of the programme afternoon tea was served by the Maori members, lhe candle on the eake was lit by Mrs. Mihaka, blown out by the secretary (Mrs. Tiweka), and cut by Mrs. Gray. Winners of (he competitions were Mrs. Haig, correct weight of birthday cake dsilbs.>; novelty, Mrs. Uttley; knitted vest. Mrs. Mihaka; basket of ferns. Mrs. Davis (judged by Mrs. Gray). The singing of the National Anthem brought the party to a close. ( ARD EVENING , A successful card evening, arranged bv the school committee, was held recently in the hall supper room when, despite the cold night there was a good attendance. The winners were: Mi'. Biackie, Mr. Leo. Mrs. Lee, and Mrs. Handley. The proceeds, which were very satisfactory, were for the school fund. The winner of the cake was Miss Barnard. nine in favour of the present halfholiday. Just over 60 business people attended the meeting, but oniy Stvoted.
