OTAIHAPE ALPINE CLUB. FORTNIGHTLY CLUB EVENING. About 2o members were piresent at tiie club rooms of the Otaihape Alpine Club on Wednesday evening when the usual fortnightly club evening was held. Opportunity was taken to put before members a brief account of the work being done by the committee in connection with arrangement of skiing trips to Ruapehu and also an account of the tentative enquiries regarding application to the National Park Board was permission to build a club hut at Ruapehu. As a result of discussion at a previous general meeting, it has been definitely decided to affiliate the club with the Youth Hostels’ Association of N.Z. (Inc.), in order to give members full benefits regarding rail and accommodation concessions on longer trips. The Youth Hostels’ Association of N.Z. is more active in the South Island than the North, but several of the ’largeri

mountaineering clubs in the North Island have affiliated and it was pointed out that the association might be assisted is its good work by more Nore Island support. A cordial welcome was extended to Mr. J. Rowan of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club, who will be in the district for about a fortnight. The latter part of the evening was taken up with a talk given by Mr. A. M. P. Hall, a member of the club and also a member of the Alpine Sports Club (Inc.) Mr. Hall’s subject dealt with a comparison of climbing conditions in the North Island and Southern Alps. The greater part of the speaker's climbing experience has been gained in the Alps and Arthur’s Pass district. Mr. Hall’s talk concluded with a brief account of several of his best remembered trids made from Rangiora to the northern extremity of the main range. The club served members and visitors with super at the conclusion of the evening. I
