MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Wanganui City Council was held last night, Mr. W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, presiding. Those present were Crs. S. J. Harris, J. Siddells, O. Hales, G. E. Bennett, J. W. Broad, R. E. Cuthbertson, G. P. Hawkins, C. N. Armstrong and D. W. Earle.
Leave of absence was granted to Crs. J. J. Scott, H. Lawrence and A. W. Scouilar.
Plans of subdivisions at Wanganui East and the Parkes Estate were received from the Department of Housing Construction for approval and were referred to the city engineer, Mr. L. F. Row.
The telegraph engineer at Wanganui advised that arrangements had been made to alter the position of two poles in Jellicoe Street immediately. A comprehensive overhaul of lines in the Wanganui East area is to be carried out in the near future and the remaining poles will be moved to the edge of the kerb.
Mrs. J. A. Neame advised that she had appointed Mr. N. M. Izard to act as her representative on the council's Sarjeant Gallery Committee and Advisory Committee in the place of the late Mr. W. A. Izard.
Requests for the installation of lights in Kowhai Street and Kaikokopu Road were received from Mrs. A. Anthony and Mr. W. Peat respectively and referred to the Works Committee. An application from the Wanganui Football Association for the installation of a light in the dressing shed at Victoria Park was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Appreciation of the action of the council in promoting them to city treasurer and city accountant respectively from September 1, were received from Messrs. F. J. Best and D. F. Glenny.
A petition signed by 11 residents of Rees Street asking for the tar-sealing of the street and footpath was referred to the Works Committee.
The Wanganui branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society’s request for a street collection day in July was granted. A deputation was heard from ratepayers in Caius Avenue, urging that the road surface be tar-sealed and that an asphalt footpath be provided, reported the Works Committee. The deputation was informed that the council has already authorised the provision of a concrete footpath five feet in width, along one side of the street. It is recommended that the matter of improving and tar-sealing the roadway receive consideration when the street works programme is being framed. A petition from ratepayers and residents of Kawatiri Avenue requesting that the road surface be tar-sealed, has been recorded for consideration when the street works programme is being drawn up. The Wanganui Harrier Club's application for the Lise of the dressing shed on one evening each week, has been received, and will be considered when the building has been completed. A petition has been received from the residents of No. 3 Line, near the railway crossing, asking that this roadway be tar-sealed, and the Works Committee recommends that the city engineer be authorised to do ordinary maintenance work to alleviate the matters complained of.
