LOANS FOR DEFENCE

“THEY ARE ONLY GUESSING’’ COMMENT FROM LONDON PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT ( Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 20 The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, said that London Press suggestions that the New Zealand Minister of Finance. Hon. W. Nash, was seeking a £6,000,000 loan for defence and a £10,000,000 loan for secondary industries and for oth°r purposes were simply guesses. Mr. Nash, he said, went to London to make arrangements about a loan falling due. That was number one.

Number two was to discuss trade relations with Britain and get whatever relief New Zealand could to enable it to take more British goods than now.

Mr. Savage said he could not see any royal road to it or any definite amount. It was simply a matter of negotiation between the representative of the New Zealand Government and the authorities in Britain.
